A' DEPARTMENT OF PROPAEDEUTIC SURGERY

BREAST AND SURGICAL ONCOLOGY UNIT

The Breast and Surgical Oncology Unit was established in 1999 following the suggestion of Prof of Surgery George Androulakis and the unanimous opinion of the Department of Surgery and of the General Assembly of the Medical School of NKUA. Ass. Professor of Surgery G. Zografos was nominated as the Administrator of the Unit. At that time  the Unit was located on the 1st floor in the Annex Building of Hippokratio General Hospital of Athens, Vassilisis Sofias 108. In 2001, when an Analogue Mammogram was donated by the Hellenic Cancer Institute (Chairman E. Frangoulis), the Unit was decided by the Hospital Board (President Harikleia Dimitriadis) to be relocated on the ground floor of the Annex Building and to operate in collaboration with the Radiology Department (Director Vrakatselis Georgios), launching a new area in its operation. During the following years the generous donations of high-tech equipment by non-profit institutions, including the Hellenic Cancer Institute (President E. Fragoulis) and the Postal Savings Bank and with the support of Hippokratio General Hospital of Athens, the Unit became a nationally recognized center providing specialized services for patients with specific breast problems. Finally, in 2015, thanks to the generous funding from the family of Mr. Athanasios and Marina Martinos, the Breast Unit was subjected to a complete building renovation and technological upgrading and since then it provides specialist advice on all breast problems, both benign (not cancer) and malignant (cancer), in women and men.

Through the years, The Breast and Surgical Oncology Unit has established numerous collaborations with many laboratories, institutions across the country including  the Academy of Athens, Hellenic Cancer Institute, etc.
